Ephemeral Works

. Gelatin Pupae

9 pupae, 17” each, containing insects.  2019

Gelatin, insects, rope

This project was accomplished with food-grade gelatin for the purpose of slowly decomposing.

Created for Composed to Decompose, a one year outdoor exhibition at Unison Sculpture Park, New Paltz, NY

Pupae are the transitional form that certain insects take between the immature and mature stages of growth. These pupae are fleshy and ephemeral; they will become a new kind of being. The pupa is a symbol of transformation: the cycle of birth, death, and regeneration. Here in the forest these organic pupae will begin to break down. The semi-stable gelatin and vegetable glycerin mixture used to create these forms has been derived from animal parts and plant oils. They will  warm and disintegrate over time, fertilizing the earth to be reborn as something new.
